Mild Moderate

This licensure qualifies individuals to work with students with mild to moderate disabilities. These students may have mild cognitive impairments, learning disabilities, emotional/behavioral disorders, or other disabilities requiring special education. The emphasis in the mild/moderate program is on identifying strategies and developing special education programs to address the educational demands needed for the student to meet the state core curriculum.

Mild/Moderate Coordinator:

Melanie Dawson, Ph.D. , Department of Special Education and Rehabilitation, is the Coordinator of the Mild/Moderate Alternative Teacher Preparation Program

Interested candidates should do the following:

  1. Attend one of the scheduled information meetings. Information about the ATP programs and district procedures for applicants will be explained.
  2. Read and review all of the information in the Frequently Asked Questions about the Utah State University Alternative Teacher Preparation Program(s).
  3. Take the basic literacy and math assessments. Passing both tests is required for admission to either program and before making application with any district. Location, dates and times that the tests will be offered are:

  4. A practice math test can be located hereNote: The additional information found at this site does not pertain to the Alternative Teacher Preparation program.
    After taking the tests, you will receive written confirmation that you have passed both assessments or that you will need to schedule a time to re-take the assessments. You may attempt each test three times. If you do not pass both tests, you cannot apply for either program.
  5. Complete the  Icon USU ATP Prospective Candidate Information Sheet (124.3 KB) . Mail or fax a copy of it to each of the participating districts to which you are interested in applying. Be sure to include the math and literacy results indicating that you have passed and your written responses to the two questions included at the bottom of the information sheet.

  6. Wait to be contacted by the individual districts. Each district has different timelines and procedures for interviewing prospective ATP candidates. It is important to adhere to the process that each district has for contacting prospective candidates for screening interviews and filling open positions.
  7. Prepare for screening interviews. Suggested resources about teaching, special education, and students with disabilities that you might want to read are:
  8. Technology requirements: USU courses are not only face-to-face class time but also internet-based coursework. Accepted ATP students must have daily access to a computer with a high-speed internet connection. Required computer applications for the USU coursework include: Adobe Acrobat, Excel, and either Word or Word Perfect. Students must be proficient in accessing the internet, word processing, and creating spreadsheets.

  1. Request a FAFSA pin number at www.pin.ed.gov . This pin number will be your signature when you complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid .
  2. With your 4 digit FAFSA pin number, complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid  on-line. Use your Federal Tax Return information from the previous year to complete the application, and list Utah State University as the school to have the information sent to. Utah State University's school code is 003677.
  3. Be admitted to USU as a matriculated student.
  4. Fill out and submit the USU Financial Aid Application .
  5. Once we receive the FAFSA & USU Financial Aid information you will be awarded student aid. If we need additional information from you, we will request this my mail. Please keep your address current with us. You will only be eligible for loans.
